The Polyglottal Stop (Podcast) – How I got hooked to it

This is a short review on an exceptional language podcast by Angelique Voice, a voice actress, podcaster, language enthusiast and former English teacher.

Angelique Voice has a brilliant creative mind

How it started

I originally wanted to do some research for one of my future episode about “language laddering”. As it can happens, I got stuck on Angelique’s take on language laddering on ep. “29 Laddering – Does it work?”

But no worries… the research can wait. Sometimes, it’s worth getting distracted, especially when you stumble upon a gem like this.

An overview of Pollyglotal Stop

For starters, The Polyglottal Stop is not the typical language podcast.
Angelique, the host of the show, is not a flawless hyperpolyglot who is telling us how to do things.

As you can already notice in the podcast’s title “Polyglottal Stop”, Angelique is a language and word pun lover.

By listening to her podcast, we can tell how important language is to her. Angelique is a very creative, energetic podcaster.

And oh boy, how I love her voice. I could listen to her for hours. No wonder she has many other projects such as audio plays in which she plays various roles as a speaker (Fantasy, Sci-fi etc.)

With more than 10 years experience in English teaching, she certainly knows her onions. And being a language learner herself, she has a lot to tell and share!

The polyglot was born and raised in Jamaica, that’s why she also speaks Patois.

My favorite episode of Pollyglotal Stop – Jamaican Patois

In ep. 26 we can learn about the Jamaican language from the perspective of various Jamaicans. I’ve found this episode one of the highlights. It’s great to have the possibility to listen to different Jamaican speakers.

Jamaican Patois is such a cool language.

A brilliant podcast

Not only can we learn in her podcast about different aspects of the English (and other) language(s) but also she points put some critical aspects of languages.

Genderless (Korean)

You never know what comes next and Angelique let’s us take part in her personal language journey (French, Spanish, Korean etc.) with all that comes with is, wlth all the ups and downs.

From a certain point on she also includes the learner’s and teachers’s perspective. So there are many interviews as well.

Once she even interviewed herself and told us why she thinks she is really a polyglot.

S03 E03 Competition in Language Learning & Anymore vs Any More

I didn’t want to get sick of the app because I have as of today a streak of 1,385 days and I’m not ready to let that go yet.

So it’s a mix of Lingusitic observations, social linguistics, language hacks, English learning and personal language diary. This is right up my alley.

The downside of the podcast!

The only downside of this podcast I see is that the last episode already aired on 23th October 2021. This is the sole disadvantage, but it is a significant one.
Sigh.
